The Gabby Petito Case

On Tuesday, September 23, the FBI confirmed that the human remains found in Wyoming's Bridger-Teton National Forest were those of 22-year-old Gabby Petito, who was reported missing more than a week earlier. Petito had been traveling cross-country with her boyfriend, Brain Laundrie, before Laundrie returned home alone in the van the couple traveled together in. Since then, he’d refused to speak to authorities.

Petito and Laundrie planned to visit state and national parks across the United States, where they vlogged and uploaded content for Gabby’s travel blog.

"She maintained regular contact with her family members during her travels; however, that communication abruptly stopped around the end of August," stated the police.

Then on August 12, officers who encountered the couple described them as “being engaged in an altercation”, although both reported they were in love, engaged to be married, and desperately didn't wish to be charged with crime. Police separated the two for the night, describing Gabby as “confused and emotional”.

Petito's family reported Gabby missing to police in Suffolk County, New York when they weren’t able to get in touch with her for days. This was over a week after Laundrie returned to the couple’s North Port home, alone.

At a news briefing, a letter read by the Petito family attorney begged Laundrie's family to help in the investigation. "Please, if you or your family have any decency left, please, tell us where Gabby is located. We haven't been able to sleep or eat, and our lives are falling apart. All we want is for Gabby to come home." the family's letter read.

After days of both Petito's family and the police pleading with Laundrie's family to cooperate in the investigation, Laundrie's family reported that they have not seen their son. Local and federal authorities began the search for the 23-year-old man on September 17.

Then 2 days later, human remains “consistent with the description of Petito” were found in Teton County, Wyoming, not far from Teton National Park, where Gabby was believed to have been before communicating with her family last. An autopsy later confirmed that the remains found were those of Gabby.

No answers to Gabby’s death and disappearance have been provided so far, as authorities continue the search for Laundrie at the Carlton Reserve.

Rest in peace, Gabby. May truth and justice be rightfully served.
