The women's all–around gymnastics final on Thursday in Tokyo was the center of attention for the international community after Simone Biles made a tough decision to prioritize her mental health and decided to withdraw.
The women's all–around gymnastics finals for the past four Olympics was won by an American and with Simone Biles bowing out, the USA team needed someone else to take home the title—Sunisa Lee.
Sunisa Lee is an 18–year–old Hmong-American from Minnesota who took home the gold medal with a stellar beam performance despite her ankle injuries. This accomplishment was not easily achieved, though.
On top of personal struggles such as the loss of loved ones to the COVID–19 pandemic or having her gym shut down during the pandemic, she also faced fierce competition on Thursday from the teams of Brazil and Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) , with Receba Andrade and Angelina Melnikova trailing Lee in second and third place, respectively.
In the end, Lee came out on top with a total score of 57.433.
