How the Canucks Fandom Has Evolved Online
By Keyaan Vegdani | Published Nov 29, 2021 5:12 p.m. PST
Although the results of the Vancouver Canucks’ first quarter of the season were extremely lackluster producing an underwhelming 6-13-2 record, fans are still finding a way to enjoy their favourite team. One example of this is the Vancouver Canucks’ unofficial subreddit, where fans take part in posting humorous memes and speculative pieces.

However, one community that really stood out to me was the Canuck’s discord server. In this server, fans are presented with a chance to interact with one another, both before games, and after. Game day events are held, with live watch alongs and commentary, and members can compete in predicting game outcomes for fun.

I recently sat down with Prabhsimar Singh Bedi, a longtime member of the server to find out more about what makes this organization tick.

Bedi has been an active member of this server since 2017, riding through the highs and lows of the Canucks organization. Canucks fan first and discord user second, Bedi came across it when looking for a community to share his fandom with online.

Yet, Bedi has found the server to evolve beyond a simple gathering place for like-minded fans. He sees the server as two major things in his life, first as “a family” and second as “a place to meet real friends.” “Everyone [there] is super inclusive, and are amazing people,” he said. “Some of them are the most real friends I’ve made.”

One of Bedi’s favourite parts of the server are the live watch alongs. For many Canucks’ fans, it’s simply impractical to go to see games in person––whether they are simply far away or don’t have the money for tickets. “It's kind of like we’re watching at Rogers Arena,” he exclaimed. “We get excited when the Canucks score and get suddenly sad with the opponent scores.” I sat in on one of these sessions, against Columbus Friday night, and it was truly incredible. The high of a beautiful goal by Vasily Podkolzin and the lows of the Canucks consistently giving up easy turnovers wove together to form a rollercoaster of emotions. Bedi has a point, it was like being with a group of dedicated fans.

As soon as I joined the server I was welcomed warmly by the server mods and other members. The server is also home to small channels that are dedicated to debating and discussing different sports and even gaming.

I highly recommend that my fellow Canucks fans click a link to the server, and take the chance to meet some amazing people like Prabhsimar.

Discord also offers different server opportunities run by your fellow students. For example, there are some made for different courses at SFU and UBC, or for getting help on different scholastic subjects. There is a whole world out there to discover, have fun, but always remember to be safe online!
